A 44-year-old South African man has been arrested for allegedly smuggling millions of rands worth of cocaine into Namibia.

Customs officers detained Michael Mpangela at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, according to News24.

Mpangela was returning from Brazil on an aircraft.

Over 10 kg of cocaine was discovered in Mpangela's suitcase, according to the media source Informanté.

Police Spokeswoman Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi stated a case of trading in cocaine powder was being probed.

In addition to the drugs, the accused was caught with R700,000 (N18,448,544.10), according to News24.

On Tuesday, Mpangala appeared in the Katutura Magistrate's Court.

He will appear in court on January 16 for a bail application, according to News24, the South African news outlet.

In November, the hawks arrested eight suspects allegedly linked to a cocaine smuggling ring between South Africa and Brazil.
