South African Court Revokes Child Sex Ring Leader's Bail

Gerhard Ackerman.

Alleged child sex ring leader Gerhard Ackerman’s bail has been revoked by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.

Ackerman was apprehended by neighbours who saw him in a shopping mall in Florida, Johannesburg after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) filed an arrest warrant for him

Ackerman did not appear in court on Thursday, January 26th, 2023 citing illness.

He also neglected to provide the court with a medical certificate as proof that he was ill and had visited a doctor.

He allegedly used the day to relocate to Pretoria and stated in court that the certificate had been misplaced in his wallet.

As previously reported, members of the public recognized Ackerman from images disseminated by the local media, which led to his arrest on Sunday morning in a shopping centre in Florida, Johannesburg.

According to NPA spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane, individuals immediately arrested Ackerman and contacted local South African Police Service (SAPS) authorities, who worked quickly to execute the arrest order.

Presiding Judge Ismail Mohamed ordered him to remain in jail under a suicide watch on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.

It is a miscarriage of justice, according to Mohamed, that Ackerman's bail conditions were unjustly amended.

According to reports, they were amended unprocedurally in the Magistrates Court in December 2022 after the case was referred to the High Court.

Ackerman is facing 740 accusations, including rape, attempted murder, child porn distribution, and human trafficking of minor minors for sexual exploitation.

He is accused of running a child sex ring in Johannesburg, where he would bring young boys in and connect them with older men in need of massages that would lead to rape.
