Southwester Hits Istanbul Again, Ferry Services Cancelled

Turkey’s Marmara region has been hit again by a southwester on Thursday morning, resulting in cancellations of many ferry services.

Due to the unfavourable weather conditions, the Marmara Region of the General Directorate of Meteorology (BUDO) announced that some ferry services for Thursday have been cancelled.

It added that the Maltepe-Adalar, Bostancı-Karaköy-Kabataş, Bostancı-Moda-Kadıköy-Kabataş, Avcılar-Bakırköy-Yenikapı-Kadıköy and Avcılar Bostancı ferry services could not be made due to the southwester.

Bursa (Mudanya)-Istanbul (Eminönü/Sirkeci), Bursa (Mudanya)-Armutlu (Ihlas), Armutlu (Ihlas)-Istanbul (Eminönü/Sirkeci) and Istanbul (Eminönü/Sirkeci)-Bursa (Mudanya) services will also not be able to operate due to adverse weather conditions.

Last month, most ferry services in Istanbul were also cancelled due to the southwester effect. The Marmara region was fatally hit, disrupting maritime traffic in Istanbul and Bursa.

The southwester effect is the result of a strong wind and movement of air that originated from the south and blows in a northward direction.
