Spain's Celebrations Spoiled By Rubiales' Kiss — Infantino

Spain's Celebrations Spoiled By Rubiales' Kiss — Infantino

Gianni Infantino

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has broken his silence on the kiss controversy involving Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales and Spain's Jenni Hermoso.

He condemned the actions of Rubiales and insisted the Spanish FA boss should never have planted an unsolicited kiss on the lips of Hermoso at the presentation ceremony in Sydney on August 20, following Spain's win over England in the Women's World Cup final.

"Sadly, the well-deserved celebrations for these magnificent champions were spoiled by what happened after the final whistle," said Infantino.

"And what continued to happen in the following days. This should never have happened.

"Fifa's disciplinary bodies immediately assumed responsibility and took the necessary actions.

"On our side, we should continue to focus on how further to support women and women's football in future, both on and off the pitch."

In the following days since the incident, there has been an uproar across Spain and around the world, as over 80 national team players are striking in protest until the leadership of the federation (RFEF) is changed.

This has led Spanish football chiefs to call for the immediate resignation of president Rubiales, with Spanish prosecutors opening a preliminary investigation into whether the incident amounts to a crime of sexual assault.

However, a decision is yet to be announced by Spain's Sports Tribunal (TAD) following the Spanish government's request to suspend Rubiales, who continues to pledge his innocence and has defiantly refused to resign.
