Sporting Lagos Overcome Remo Stars To Win Naija Super 8

Sporting Lagos on Sunday emerged as the inaugural champions of the Naija Super 8 after beating Remo Stars on penalties.

The newly promoted Nigeria Professional League (NPL) club triumphed 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a one-all draw.

It was a tense final inside a sold-out Mobolaji Johnson Arena, with nothing to separate both sides at halftime.

But seven minutes after the start of the second half, Sporting went in front courtesy of Aliu Salawudeen, who capitalised on Remo Stars' error at the back and poked in a Chiemeka Nwokeji free-kick.

It could have been 2-0 some minutes after but Kayode Bankole made a stunning save to deny Saturday Okon.

Remo later got the equaliser they needed in the 86th minute but Adams Olamilekan's effort off Ismail Sodiq’s cross was ruled out for offside.

Eventually, parity was restored in the third minute of stoppage time, when Olamilekan finished off an assist from Alimi to make the scoreline 1-1 and send the game into a penalty shootout.

Sporting converted all their kicks in the shootout to claim their first major piece of silverware in the off-season tournament.

For the emerging winner, the one-year-old Lagos club was awarded the star prize of N25 million while Remo got N9 million.

With Sporting promoted to the NPL, both clubs will rekindle their newfound southwest rivalry in the league next season.
