Sri Lanka Shuts Schools Amid Cyclone Mandous

Sri Lanka Shuts Schools Amid Cyclone Mandous

A cyclonic storm passing the Sri Lankan coast prompted school closures across the country on Friday.

This is due to high air pollution levels as it ushered in strong winds and rain.

The storm is also forecast to make landfall on India's southeastern coast around midnight.

Authorities deployed nearly 400 disaster relief personnel in Tamil Nadu state and urged people to stock up on essentials.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that a storm surge of about half a meter above the high tide was likely to inundate low-lying coastal areas.

Also, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was expected.
