Standards Organization Of Nigeria Joins Standards, Metrology

The Standards and Metrology Institute of Islamic Countries (SMIIC) has admitted the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) as the 44th member of the organisation.

SON's Director-General, Malam Farouk Salim, disclosed this on Monday at the organisation’s special day at the ongoing 42nd Kano International Trade Fair.

The admission of Nigeria makes it the 19th African country in the 43 – member organisation.

Salim said that SON had become an integral part of the potential global Halal market size that was expected to reach about 9.71 trillion dollars by 2025.

He said that last year had enhanced the organisation’s technical capacities in standard development, accredited management system, training and certification.

He further said that as the year 2021 wounds down, importers and dealers in life-endangering products like tyres and lubricants should imbibe self-regulation and avoid selling substandard and life-endangering items to people.

The SON boss advised regulatory authorities to be proactive while road transport workers, employers and commuters should pay closer attention to the state of tyres on vehicles, particularly commercial transportation.

On his part, Alhaji Dalhatu Abubakar, President, Kano Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, represented by Vice-President, Ambassador Usman Darma, thanked SON for organising the programme to enlighten the business community on the importance of selling and buying standard products.
