Stay Away From Hand Sanitisers With 1-Propanol - UN Warns

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that some hand sanitisers contain 1-propanol, a harmful toxin that affects our body's central nervous system.

In its recommendations, the FDA said that some of the products that have been found to have this toxin are from 'Harmonic Nature, S de RL de MI', a Mexican brand.

It also added that 1-propanol should not be miscontrued as "2-propanol/isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol", as it is not a suitable "ingredient for hand sanitisers."

The statement read, “1-propanol, not to be confused with 2-propanol/isopropanol/isopropyl alcohol, is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitiser products marketed in the U.S. and can be toxic and life-threatening when ingested."

It went further to explain that the demographic most at risk are children who are likely to ingest the products accidentalyy.

Included in the statement are symptoms of exposure to 1-propanol, decreased consciousness, confusion, and slow breathing and pulse.

“Consumers who have been exposed to hand sanitiser containing 1-propanol and are experiencing symptoms should seek immediate care for treatment of toxic effects of 1-propanol poisoning.

“Skin or eye exposure to 1-propanol can result in irritation, and rare cases of allergic skin reactions have been reported,” the FDA stated.

In a related event, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in a finding, states that there has been a rise in the sale of fake COVID-19 related products.

The organisation stated, “Health and lives are at risk with criminals exploiting the COVID-19 crisis to cash in on public anxiety and increased demand for PPE and medications.

“We need to help countries increase cooperation to close gaps, build law enforcement and criminal justice capacity, and drive public awareness to keep people safe."
