Strike: ASUU Says FG Yet To Meet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has stated that most of its demands which led to the 2022 strike are yet to be addressed by the Federal Government. 

ASUU had gone on strike due to demands including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of revitalisation funds for universities, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and the acceptance of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as the body's payment platform.

The national body called off the eighth-month strike following a series of negotiations with the government and the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

However, months after the strike was called off, the union is accusing the government of abandoning the problem.

Osodeke added that the FG is yet to call a meeting with ASUU since the strike was called off. 

“As far as this present government is concerned, once the strike is over, the issue is resolved unknown to them that a strike is a symptom of a problem.

"They have abandoned the problem. Since we called off the strike based on a court directive, not a single meeting has been called. Not a kobo has been paid,” he told Channels Television on Thursday.

The ASUU don added that the members of the unions are striving to meet up with the academic calendar, despite the government's lack of commitment. 

“It is so unfortunate that they don’t have any regard for the Nigerian education system,” Osodeke added.
