Strike: ASUU Holds NEC Meeting As Chapters Vote Differently

Strike: ASUU Holds NEC Meeting As Chapters Vote Differently

Chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have voted differently over the suspension of the union's eight-month-old strike.

Universities under the union began voting on whether or not the ongoing strike should be suspended on Wednesday.

This development comes after the order by the Appellate court, last Friday, for members of ASUU to return to work and the intervention of the House of Representatives in the impasse.

Punch reports that over 123 chapters of ASUU have ended their congresses on the prolonged strike during which they voted for or against the suspension.

A source within the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife who spoke to the news outlet said the chapter did not reach a consensus.

“No agreement was reached. Members agreed to follow the decision of the union’s National Executive Committee. Remember, we were on strike before the national body declared a strike,” the source said.

The Federal University of Technology, Akure and members of ASUU from the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in their joint congress voted for the strike to be suspended in obedience to the court order.

“Members did not want to vote initially but you know ASUU is a union of intellectuals and we cannot be caught breaking the law. That was why we voted for suspension,” a member of the union who attended the congress said.

The case was different at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University and  Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria where the chapters voted in favour of a conditional suspension.

It was also reported that Usmanu DanFodiyo University voted for the suspension of the strike in line with the court order.

The union's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting is scheduled to hold today (Thursday).
