Sudan: African Union's Security Council Meet To Discuss Next

African Union's Security Council.

The African Union's Peace and Security Council met on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the headquarters in Addis Ababa to discuss the next steps regarding the situation in Sudan, including the implementation of the AU roadmap for the resolution of the conflict.

According to a Sudanese diplomatic source, the army has ceased discussions with the opposing paramilitary force, RSF, regarding a ceasefire and access to aid.

Fighting has erupted in Sudan since April 15th between government forces and the paramilitary organization Rapid Support Forces.

Negotiations in early May resulted in a proclamation of promises to protect civilians and two short-term ceasefire agreements, both of which were repeatedly violated.

A government spokesman speaking in Saudi Arabia, where discussions are taking place, accused paramilitary groups of repeatedly violating prior ceasefires.

Despite the prolongation of a previous truce, violence resumed in Khartoum and the Darfur area on Tuesday.
