The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on Muslims in Nigeria to observe the crescent of Sha’aban 1445AH after sunset on Saturday, 29th Rajab, 1445AH (February 10, 2024), in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan fasting season.
The directive was issued by Professor Salisu Shehu, the Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, in a statement.
Shehu noted that scientifically, the expected time for the moon’s conjunction is on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
However, he emphasized that the visibility of the crescent moon typically occurs sometime after the conjunction, taking into account various environmental factors.
This announcement serves as a reminder for Muslims to anticipate the beginning of Sha’aban, the eighth month of the lunar calendar, signaling that Ramadan, the ninth month, is approximately one month away.
It signifies the approaching period of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims worldwide.
