Super Eagles Coach Peseiro Attributes 'Bad Luck' To Loss Aga

Jose Peseiro

Nigeria's coach Jose Peseiro has lamented his team's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Guinea Bissau during a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Despite Nigeria's star-studded squad, the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau, who are ranked 118th in the world by FIFA, managed to secure a surprise win and go top of group A.

Peseiro attributed the loss to bad luck and missed opportunities, stating that his team could have played for another hour and still not scored.

"We missed many goals. We could have been here for another hour and not scored.

"Sometimes it happens in football," the disappointed Portuguese coach said.

"I am not happy of course, I am sad, like my team, but they did the maximum.

"If you play like we played, you can beat any team, not only Guinea Bissau."

He also questioned the officiating, claiming that his team had two penalty appeals overlooked, and the referee did not provide enough additional time.

The two teams will clash again on Monday, with Guinea Bissau now topping the qualifying group with seven points, while Nigeria dropped to second place on six points.

Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe occupy third and fourth place, respectively.

The top two teams from the group will qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup, which will be hosted by Ivory Coast in January 2024.
