Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar has suffered a knee injury which is expected to rule him out of action until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Umar was subbed off in Real Sociedad's clash against Getafe in the 37th minute after suffering an ACL injury.
The former Roma striker joined Real Sociedad from Almeria on the last day of the summer transfer window.
The club have confirmed that their new signing has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg.
“Sadiq Umar suffered a right knee sprain during the Getafe-RS match held yesterday.
"After the tests carried out today on the player, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg.
“He will start physiotherapy treatment.
"However, he will undergo surgical treatment.”
Real Sociedad did not state the duration of his absence, but an ACL injury usually takes six to nine months for a full recovery.
Umar has played a pivotal role for Real Sociedad since joining, he scored on his La Liga debut against Atletico Madrid and also impressed in the Europa League win against Manchester United.
He is expected to miss out on Nigeria's friendly against Algeria on September 27 in Oran.
Sadiq Umar is the third Nigerian player to suffer a long-term injury after the likes of Jamilu Collins and Akinkunmi Amoo, who are not expected to be back until next year.
