Super Eagles Winger Chukwueze Wins La Liga African MVP Award For 2022-23

Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has been declared the winner of the prestigious 2022-23 LaLiga Santander African MVP Award.

The talented Villarreal CF star emerged as the top choice after receiving votes from thousands of fans and esteemed African football journalists, who recognized his outstanding performances throughout the season.

The Nigerian international had a remarkable campaign for the Yellow Submarine, showcasing his dynamic skills and contributing significantly to the team's success.

Chukwueze found the back of the net 13 times and provided 11 assists in all competitions. He featured in 37 out of 38 LaLiga Santander matches, playing a pivotal role in Villarreal CF's qualification for European competition in the upcoming season.

Expressing his joy upon receiving the award, Chukwueze said, "I feel so happy to win this award. I've worked very hard this season, but I want to thank my teammates for making it possible. Without them, this wouldn't have been possible for me... and the coach [Quique Setién] too. When the coach believes in you and gives you the confidence to play and enjoy yourself, it really motivates you."

The ambitious young forward emphasized his desire to continue improving, stating, "But I think I can still do more. I want to continue working hard. I'm still young, so I'm still learning. This is just the beginning."

Chukwueze faced stiff competition for the award, with Iñaki Williams, the record-breaking Athletic Club forward and mid-season African MVP, finishing as a close runner-up. Williams scored 10 goals in 36 LaLiga Santander matches this season and set a remarkable record by making 251 consecutive LaLiga appearances for the Basque side over seven seasons.

While goalkeeper Bounou, last season's inaugural LaLiga Santander African MVP Award winner, displayed remarkable penalty shootout heroics that helped Sevilla FC secure the UEFA Europa League title, Chukwueze's consistent attacking threat and brilliant displays elevated him to the top spot this season.
