Super Falcons: Plumptre Hails Oparanozie Following Retiremen

Super Falcons star Ashleigh Plumptre has paid tribute to former teammate Desire Oparanozie after she retired from professional football at 29.

Oparanozie stunned Nigerians Wednesday when she took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce her retirement at international and club level.

“It’s time to take a bow, as I believe there’s no better time than now," she said.

"I’m officially announcing my retirement from professional football for both club and country."

Following Oparanozie's retirement, Plumptre described the 29-year-old as "a true leader" on her X account.

“A true leader in all its forms,” Plumptre wrote.

“So grateful to have played alongside you and learnt from your courage in always representing us and those who come after us ❤️ Big love to you always @oparanozie9.”

Meanwhile, Plumptre signed for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad Ladies on Wednesday morning.

The 25-year-old centre-back left her hometown club Leicester as a free agent after her contract expired on July 13.

She had spent three years with Leicester, during which she helped the Foxes win promotion to the Women's Super League for the first time in the 2020/21 season.
