Swiatek makes history, defeats Sabalenka in Italian Open wom

Iga Swiatek produced a swashbuckling display Saturday evening as she went on a 12-match winning streak to dominate Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the 2024 Italian Open and win her third title in Rome.

The world No 1 overcame Sabalenka 6-2, 6-3 in the women's final at the Foro Italico in a repeat of the epic Madrid Open final she won in a final set tiebreak earlier this month.

Swiatek has thus claimed her 10th WTA 1000 title and 21st career singles title overall.

With her victory in Rome, Swiatek became just the third woman and fifth player overall to win both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open in the same year.

Dinara Safina (2009) and Serena Williams (2013) are the only other WTA players to win the two big clay-court events back-to-back. The rare achievement has been termed the Dirtball Double’.

Swiatek has become the second woman in the Open Era after Gabriela Sabatini to win three titles at the Italian Open before turning 23. The four-time Grand Slam champion will celebrate her 23rd birthday on May 31.

Argentine legend Sabatini triumphed in Rome in 1988, 1989, 1991 and 1992.
