Tanzania Heavy Rains Cut Off Road, Leave Travellers Stranded
The Dodoma-Morogoro Highway has been cut off after heavy downpours rendered it impassable leaving travellers and goods stranded on a road that connects the nation’s capital with other parts in the South.
The downpour began at 0300hrs, flooding the roads and forcing officials to halt traffic movement.
In addition to the roads, inhabitants of Kihonda, which is the most impacted, have been forced to flee their houses owing to floods.
District Commissioner Albert Msando has arrived on the site, along with fire and rescue personnel, but has so far refrained to comment on the situation.
No fatalities have been recorded.
The Acting Commander of the Morogoro Region Fire and Rescue Service, Emmanuel Ochieng, stated that they had so far rescued 48 persons whose homes had been inundated in the Kihonda ward as a result of the severe downpour.
According to Ochieng, individuals who have been rescued are presently being housed at the ward office for food, shelter, and other necessities.
Furthermore, he stated that people should be cautious due to the rains while requesting that those who have dug latrine pits cover them so that they do not cause further harm.
