Taraba CAN expresses dismay over killings in Takum, others

The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed dismay over the recent killings by bandits in Takum Local Government Area of the state among other places.

The other communities included Yangtu Special Development Area and Ussa Local Government Area of the state.

Bandits had on the evening of Friday, November 24, 2023, attacked the communities, killing innocent civilians.

CAN lamented that despite the signing of a peace agreement in the communities recently, innocent residents were been killed.

The Chairman of the State Chapter, Reverend (Dr) Isaiah Magaji Jirapye made this known in a statement on Sunday.

Jirapye described the attacks as dastard and inhumane which should be condemned.

The statement partly reads: "CAN demand a thorough investigation into the killings with the aim of unravelling the perpetrators and making them face the law.

"It is disheartening that despite efforts from relevant stakeholders to ensure that peace permanently returns to the communities in the Kuteb land in southern Taraba, some elements can still raise arms against others without provocation.

"It is high time for the government to initiate measures that will permanently end such carnage.

"CAN appeals to government and intelligence agencies to do everything possible to arrest those behind this barbaric act.

"It enjoined the people to stay calm and never to take the law into their hands but assist the security agencies with relevant information to arrest the perpetrators.

"CAN prays God Almighty to comfort those who lost loved ones in the killings and the entire Yangtu Special Development Area."
