TCN Infrastructure
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) experienced its second electricity system collapse in 2024, disrupting the operations of electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide.
The collapse led to a loss of power supply across the network, affecting many parts of the country.
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) notified its customers of the incident and assured them of efforts to restore the grid.
TCN spokesperson, Mrs. Ndid Mba, confirmed the system collapse and stated that recovery efforts were underway, with supply restored in some areas including Benin, Abuja, and others.
This incident adds to a series of nationwide blackouts experienced in 2023. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, acknowledged the challenges facing the power sector and urged Nigerians to be patient.
CEO of Kodion Energy, Mr. Joshua Okorie, advocated for the breakup of the national power grid into micro-grid systems along state lines, citing the outdated infrastructure of the current grid.
Minister Adelabu emphasized the need for a modern grid system to improve electricity supply, pointing to the success of localized systems like the one in Aba, Abia State.
He highlighted the vast potential of Nigeria's renewable energy sector, particularly in addressing the electricity deficit in rural areas.
