Ten Best Movies Of 2022

2022 has been a rollercoaster of a year, never lacking in constant film releases as movie fans were treated to a wide variety in the past eleven months.

With just a few days to 2023, AllNews Nigeria brings you the ten movies that made the most impact this year based on our subjective opinion.

Below are the movies in ascending order.

10. Emancipation

Will Smith's acting prowess has never been in doubt and following the scandalous incident with Chris Rock at the Oscars, he returned to the big screen with a stellar performance in Emancipation.

Highlighting the horrors of slavery, Antoine Fuqua's film is a no-holds-barred look at a man whose sheer grit and determination to escape his masters inspired many.

Smith and Fuqua deliver in this graphic tale that sees the former give what is arguably his finest movie outing to date.

9. The Sea Beast

It's a rare thing for streaming giant Netflix to release something extraordinary these ways but when they choose to, they go all out.

The Sea Beast is one of those animated films that surpassed expectations with its poignant story, magical visuals, and compelling characters.

Resonating with both critics and audiences, this is one film that definitely deserves to be on this list.

8. Rise

Giannis Antetokounmpo stunned the world sporting world when he became one of the few basketball players in history to win two MVPs before turning 26.

Rise tells the true-life story of the Nigerian-Greek athlete whose humble beginnings steered and motivated him and his siblings to work harder to become the stars they are today.

Helmed by Akin Omotoso, with Disney producing, this coming-of-age tale is instructive, entertaining and inspiring.

7. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio

Retelling a fairy tale after it has been seen several times on the big screen is no easy feat but acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro proved he was up to the task with his interpretation of the wooden boy and his aged father.

Tugging at your heartstrings with a touching story and bewitching aesthetics, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio takes the number seven spot in the list of 2022's best films.

While choosing to go a slightly more mature and sometimes bizarre route, the director sticks to the basics and succeeds in creating an unforgettable.

6. Bullet Train

David Leitch mixes style with substance effectively in Bullet Train, a movie about different individuals whose ties to a briefcase on a train lead to unforeseen consequences.

Blending action, nuanced characters, and an intriguing plot, this film showed that age hasn't slowed down lead star Brad Pitt.

Bullet Train is not your average action flick and those who have seen it can attest to the fact that it stands out among 2022 movies.

5. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Rian Johnson's much-anticipated sequel to the original hit doesn't disappoint with its ensemble cast delivering the goods.

What begins as a hangout among friends ends as a quest to find a killer and the mystery and suspense that unfold is guaranteed to whet the appetite of those who love to solve riddles.

Daniel Craig returns as the savvy detective Benoit Blanc, with members of the supporting cast adding the necessary spice.

4. Thirteen Lives

June and July 2018 was a dark time for Thailand because of the precarious situation that twelve members of a junior association football team found themselves.

Based on the true story of the Tham Luang cave rescue, Thirteen Lives captures the nerve-wracking experience of those who stared death in the face.

When you have the talented Ron Howard in the directorial seat, you are sure of getting the best and that is exactly what this film encapsulates.

3. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Marvel Studios may be losing its Midas Touch but it got this sequel right, paying homage to the late Chadwick Boseman in spectacular fashion.

Actress Letitia Wright fills in the shoes of the protagonist who has to become Wakanda's protector in the wake of her brother's demise when external forces threaten her home.

With themes of loss, love, revenge and redemption, director Ryan Coogler makes a sequel worth the wait and Marvel fans look forward to the next chapter.

2. Avatar: The Way Of Water

Returning to the breathtaking world of Pandora was as eye-popping as it was grand, thanks to director James Cameron's singular vision.

Despite the 13-year gap between Avatar: The Way Of Water and its predecessor, Cameron manages to capture the essence of the franchise; the battle for survival and the effects of war.

Jake Sully and his family face a foe from the past and when they discover that running won't shake this relentless enemy off their tail, they fight back in a climax that shocks and breaks your heart.

1. Top Gun: Maverick

Those who know Hollywood's biggest star expect nothing less than the best when he is working on a film.

Tom Cruise's return as the daredevil pilot  Pete "Maverick" Mitchell was both a grand and death-defying affair, earning Top Gun: Maverick critical acclaim.

Opting for practical effects rather than CGI, director Joseph Kosinski goes beyond the level attained by the 1986 prequel and the final result puts this film at the top spot of our list.
