In 1974, the country single was released. Parton's song was a commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice: once in June 1974 and again in October 1982 with a re-recording for the soundtrack of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

"Shape of You" was nominated for British Single of the Year and British Video of the Year at the 2018 Brit Awards. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
