Ten Oldest Social Media Platforms In The World

Social media platforms have evolved to become a central part of modern life.

While the Internet has been around for decades, social media platforms have only recently become popular.

People may use these platforms to exchange material, communicate with one another, and have real-time interactions.

Because they allow users to develop communities based on their interests and hobbies, social media platforms are a vital component of the world's progress.

These communities are frequently developed around shared hobbies such as sports or music, but they can also be formed around more abstract themes such as politics or current events.

Below are ten of the oldest social media platforms in the world.

10. YouTube

Year Introduced: February 2005
Founders: Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim.
Company: Google

Three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, founded the American online video-sharing platform in February 2005, with its headquarters in San Bruno, California.

Google paid $1.65 billion in buying the website in November 2006, and it has been one of Google's subsidiaries ever since.

YouTube users have access to several functions, including the ability to publish, view, share, add to playlists, report, comment on, and subscribe to the material of other users.

As a result of YouTube's huge traffic increase, a distinct set of difficulties occurred. The company must regularly acquire new computers and broadband Internet connections.

As more media companies discovered that some of the videos posted on YouTube included copyrighted content, YouTube was forced to put aside greater financial resources for potential legal proceedings.

You can only store videos for offline viewing using YouTube’s in-app download tool. You will need particular tools or software that is accessible elsewhere online to download YouTube videos onto your devices.

9. Bebo

Year Introduced: January 2005
Founder Michael and Xochi Birch
Company: The Monkey Inferno

On the website Bebo, users may create free social networking profiles. As anyone familiar with other social networking websites will notice, Bebo offers many of the same functions.

Bebo allows you to create a free account and upload files such as photos, movies, and data.

The unique user experience of the website allows you to reconnect with old acquaintances and meet new ones.

Bebo, a website located in San Francisco, California, debuted in 2005 and had more than 40 million registered members by 2008.

When AOL purchased the website, Bebo became part of a larger plan known as AOL People Networks.

You may start by inviting your connections to join Bebo to make new acquaintances, or you can give Bebo access to your email contacts by giving them your login details. You will be able to view friends of friends as your friend list expands.

8. hi5

Year Introduced: June 2004
Founder Ramu Yalamanchi
Company: The Meet Group

Hi5 turned a profit in its first year of business after launching as a social networking site in June 2003.

Ramu Yalamanchi's website became well-known in Latin American countries as well as Mongolia, Tunisia, and Romania. Hi5's traffic peaked in 2007, trailing only MySpace.

Hi5 is a social networking service for those interested in flirting, dating, and finding new friends.

It is similar to the Tagged website. Both websites are owned by The Meet Group, a supplier of social and mobile technologies.

In April 2009, after Bill Gossman was named CEO, hi5 changed its aim to become a social-network gaming platform and welcomed new game creators.

7. Facebook

Year Introduced: February 2004
Founders: Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes
Company: Meta

Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin were all Harvard University students when they launched Facebook in 2004 as a supplier of online social networks based in the United States and a branch of Meta Platforms.

Facebook has over three billion subscribers as of 2021, with roughly half of them visiting it every day. As a result, it became the most popular social network in the world.

The website is divided into several sections, including Timeline, a section on each user's profile page where users can post content and friends can post messages; Status, which allows users to notify friends of their current location or circumstance; and News Feed, which alerts users to updates to their friends' profiles and status.

Every single day, almost 350 million images are posted on Facebook.

6. Orkut

Year Introduced: January 2004
Founder Orkut Büyükkökten
Company: Google
Still Active: No

Orkut, a social networking site, was owned and operated by Google. Users can use the service to maintain current friendships and form new ones.

According to Google's statement, Google Brazil will manage and administrate Orkut in Brazil, in the city of Belo Horizonte, beginning in 2008.

The move was taken in response to rising legal concerns and a sizable Brazilian user base.

According to Google, Orkut will be wholly managed and controlled by Google Brazil in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, beginning in 2008.

The decision was made due to the large number of users in Brazil and the rising legal difficulties.

A user of Orkut can have the option of adding movies from Google Video or YouTube to their profile, and they could also make polls that were either closed or open to the public for user polling.

5. MySpace

Year Introduced: August 2003
Founders: Chris DeWolfe, Tom Anderson, Jon Hart
Company: Viant Technology LLC

Users may create Web "profile" pages on Myspace, a free advertising-supported site, that features photographs, a list of their activities, and, most importantly, connections to the profiles of other users.

You may use the website to keep in touch with old acquaintances, "meet" and make friends with new people, or seek potential love prospects.

Users must be at least 13 years old to minimize access by potential sexual predators, and profiles of those under 16 cannot be seen by those over 18.

Myspace soon separated itself from other social networking sites by allowing and even encouraging, musicians to market themselves on the platform.

This gave Myspace a cool vibe and made it a popular hangout for youngsters. Furthermore, it was known for having raunchier profiles and attitudes than other websites.

Myspace continued to gradually bring out additional features, such as a Myspace record label and collaborations with other sites like the video-sharing website YouTube.

4. LinkedIn

Year Introduced: May 2003
Founders: Reid Hoffman, Eric Ly
Company: Microsoft Corporation

In contrast to other social networks, such as Facebook and Myspace, LinkedIn places greater emphasis on a user's professional relationships.

On profile pages that look like a résumé, users may summarize their professions, showcase their distinctive qualities, and discuss their schooling and professional experience.

Connections between users are formed when one user accepts another's request to join his or her network.

LinkedIn users may advance their careers by looking for jobs, interacting with individuals at specific companies, and obtaining recommendations from other members.

Although joining LinkedIn is free, users can upgrade to a premium membership to view all LinkedIn users' profiles as well as extra profiles in their search results.

On the website, a function called “Career Advice” connects mentors and mentees. It is hoped that by connecting at a high level, both parties will have better professional futures.

3. Friendster

Year Introduced: March 2002
Founder: Jonathan Abrams
Company: MOL Global
Still Active: No

Jonathan Abrams, a Canadian computer engineer, developed Friendster in March 2002.

It was made in a basement with ten friends and released the following month.

It had several hundred users within a few weeks, and by early 2003, it had more than 3 million.

Friendster's main purpose was to allow people from all around the world to interact, mingle, and reconnect with old friends while also establishing new ones.

It has over 115 million users since it launched as a social gaming platform in June 2011.

On June 14, 2015, the website and all of its services were permanently shut down; however, the firm did not technically stop operations until the end of June 2018.

Several other smaller social networking sites came before Friendster, but it was one of the first of them to reach over 1 million users.

2. Ryze

Year Introduced: October 2001
Founder: Adrian Scott
Company: Unknown

Ryze links business experts, particularly startup entrepreneurs. The website, which has over 500,000 visitors in 200 countries, is hosted by over 1,000 other companies.

Adrian Scott established it in early 2001, as one of the first of a new wave of social networking sites, and it had a big effect on Friendster.

Visitors to the website may establish profiles, add friends, and send messages.

According to rumours, Jonathan Abrams, the guy who developed Friendster, was an early user of the website and was inspired to create a dating version of Ryze.

1. SixDegrees

Year Introduced: May 1997
Founder: Andrew Weinreich
Company: MacroView, YouthStream Media Networks
Still Active: No

Founded by Andrew Weinrich in 1997, the first social media platform ever, SixDegrees, set out to identify and map a collection of true connections between actual people using those people’s real identities.

It was based on the Web of Contacts social networking idea and initially lasted from 1997 to 2000.

The site, which drew its name from the six degrees of separation theory, allowed users to list friends, family, and acquaintances both within and outside the site.

The website still sends out rare email updates and solicitations to anyone who has confirmed a relationship with an existing member but has not registered with it.

Users may see all of their relationships with other users on the website and send messages and bulletin board postings to people in their first, second, and third degrees.

At its peak, SixDegrees had 3.5 million users, but due to the constraints of internet bandwidth, it was a concept that was years ahead of its time.
