Ten Prominent Nigerians Who Died In 2022

In the year 2022, Nigeria said goodbye to some adored celebrities and notable/prominent personalities. 

Some of these personalities died as a result of ailments, while others died mysteriously, terrifying the entertainment industry and Nigerians as a whole.

Between January and November, more than a dozen prominent Nigerians died and will be sorely missed.

Below are ten notable/prominent Nigerians who died in 2022.

 

1. Tafa Oloyede

Tafa Oloyede was a veteran actor who died in the second month of the year.

His real name was John Adewuni Adewoye, and he was born on November 19, 1952, in Ede, Osun state.

He died on February 1, 2022, at the age of 69.

 

2. Lari Williams

Lari Williams was one of the Nollywood stars who passed away this year.

Lari was a Nigerian actor, poet, and playwright who was born in Ikom, Cross River State in 1940.

He died on February 27, 2022, at the age of 81, following a long illness.

 

3. Ada Ameh. 

Ada Ameh, a popular Nollywood comedy actress, died on Sunday, July 17, 2022, after collapsing and being transported to a hospital in Delta state.

She was reported to be a guest of an oil company's top shot with her family when she collapsed during a gathering.

According to reports, the famed actress collapsed and was brought to a hospital run by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Warri, Delta state, where she was pronounced dead.

 

4. Osinachi Nwachukwu

Osinachi Nwachukwu died on April 8, 2022 at the age of 42. It was a Friday evening at a private hospital in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.

It was reported that the singer was suffering from throat cancer.

Osinachi was widely known for her hit gospel song, 'Ekwueme'.

She was also a lead singer at the Dunamis International Gospel centre.

Following news that Osinachi's husband had beaten and kicked her in the chest, landing her in the hospital, her colleagues in gospel music, as well as Nigeria's Minister for Women's Affairs, sought justice for her death.

However, according to the results of an autopsy performed on her body, Osinachi died as a result of throat cancer and not as a result of domestic abuse.

 

5. Rico Swavey

Born Patrick Fakoya, Swavey participated in the 2018 edition of the reality TV show titled ‘Double Wahala’ which was won by Miracle Igbokwe.

He is remembered as one of the amiable and peaceful housemates of the reality TV show.

Following the ghastly car accident that left him on life support, the former Big Brother Naija housemate, Rico Swavey died on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

He was 29 years old.

 

6. Chinedu Nwadike

Chinedu Nwadike, a popular gospel singer and Nollywood actor whose death shook the world, was put to rest in his birthplace of Orlu, Imo State.

On Friday, June 3, 2022, he was laid to rest. Many of those present at the burial site was overcome with emotion as they sobbed bitterly as the late gospel music legend and Nollywood actor was put to rest.

In March 2022, it was announced that the late gospel singer had died in an Abuja hospital after suffering a dangerous disease that ended his life.

On May 24, 2022, a song service was organized at the Living Faith Church in Owerri, Imo state, in memory of the late gospel artist. Chinedu Nwadike died at the age of 39.

 

7. Leo Mezie

Leonard Chimezie Onyemachi, also known as Leo Mezie, a Nollywood actor who had been fighting kidney illness for a while, died on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the age of 46.

The actor, who had a kidney transplant over four years ago, underwent another one a few months ago but developed problems and died as a result.

According to sources, Leo Mezie had been in and out of the hospital for some time, attempting to regain his footing.

He died on Saturday in Abuja while recovering from a kidney transplant.

His corpse has been moved to Umuahia his hometown.

 

8. Alaafin Of Oyo, Lamidi Adeyemi

Another prominent Nigerian who died in 2022 was the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III.

The monarch died on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.

The King passed on at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti to meet his ancestors having reigned on the throne for 53 years.

 

9. Sammie Okposo

Sammie Okposo, a multi-award-winning gospel singer, died on November 25, 2022, at the age of 51, at his Lagos residence.

Okposo, who has ministered via music in local and worldwide arenas, set the internet ablaze earlier this year after publicly apologizing to his wife for adultery and pleading for forgiveness.

The death of Sammie Okposo came as a shock to the Nigerian Gospel world and Nigerians at large. 

The gospel was known to be very energetic, so when the news circulated that he died of cardiac arrest, it was shocking to everyone.
 

10. Ernest Shonekan

Former President and the Head of the National Interim Government (ING), Chief Ernest Shonekan died on January 11, 2022, aged 85.

Shonekan, who took over as President of Nigeria from previous Military President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida for just three months, from August 26 to November 17, 1993, died of natural causes in his home in Lekki, Lagos.
