Ten Richest US Billionaires Of Indian Descent

The richest person of Indian heritage in the US is Jay Chaudhry. 

From $3.4 billion in 2018 to $12 billion in 2021, he saw a growth in his net worth. 

However, according to Forbes, his net worth has decreased to $8.3 billion as a result of the 2022 stock market crash. 

Rakesh Gangwal, a Miami-based aviation expert, had previously been in first place (in 2018 and 2019), but Chaudhry has now surpassed him.

Numerous US billionaires with Indian ancestry are listed in Forbes. The top 10 are as follows:


1. Jay Chaudhry (Net Worth: $8.3 Billion)

Jay Chaudhry, the CEO of Zscaler, was born in Panoh, a rural community in Himachal Pradesh without running water. 

Today, Chaudhry is the Indian American with the greatest net worth in the US.

His journey from a small Himalayan village to Wall Street is inspiring and a testament to the American Dream. 

One of the most prosperous businesspeople of Indian descent in the San Francisco Bay Area's cyber security sector is Chaudhry.

After a brief career in sales and marketing positions at organizations like IBM, he co-founded Zscaler in San Jose, California, a virtual security checkpoint for firms vulnerable to cyber dangers.

He earned degrees from Harvard and the University of Cincinnati.

In contrast to other millionaires, he claims his success has been driven by his “very little attachment to money. I do not feel like a billionaire even with a billion-dollar fortune.”

 

2. Vinod Khosla (Net Worth: $5.3 Billion)

Vinod Khosla's net worth increased as a result of an increase in his fortune from $2.3 billion in 2020 to $5.3 billion in 2022.

As a result of the 1947 Partition, his family moved from Pakistan to India. 

Wadhwani is currently the wealthiest Gujarati in America. A self-made serial entrepreneur, Symphony Technology Group's CEO and founder. 

California-based Wadhwani's net worth increased to $5.1 billion from $3.4 billion in 2020, placing him third among the wealthiest Americans of Indian descent according to Forbes 2022.

Wadhwani, an electrical engineering graduate of IIT Bombay and a renowned humanitarian philanthropist, also holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. 

He established the Wadhwani Foundation, which has several programs including the National Entrepreneurship Network, to promote socioeconomic development in nations like India.

In 2012, he opened a research centre at the National Center for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru.

 

4. Rakesh Gangwal (Net Worth: $4 Billion)

Rakesh Gangwal was born in Kolkata. According to Forbes 2022, Gangwal, who is currently based in Miami, Florida, has a net worth of more than $4 billion, making him the fourth richest person of Indian descent among the 400 billionaires in the United States. 

In 2018, Gangwal, a former co-founder of IndiGo, the country's largest low-cost carrier, ranked as the wealthiest of 10 Americans of Indian descent.

His finances suffered a severe decline as a result of the pandemic's effects on aviation. 

He received his mechanical engineering degree from IIM Lucknow, pursued an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1984, after working in strategic planning for United Airlines, realized his American Dream by becoming the helm of US Airways Group. 

In addition to founding InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. in 2000, Gangwal also co-founded IndiGo in 2006.

IndiGo has overtaken other low-cost carriers in India in terms of domestic market share.


5. Niraj Shah (Net Worth: $2.8 Billion)

An immigrant from India, Shah graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor's in engineering in 1995.

He is presently the CEO of Wayfair, a US e-commerce business that trades in home products online and was formed in 2002. 

His father was a mechanical engineer for GE; following his retirement, he joined Wayfair early on and continues to work for the firm, offering financial advice.

His grandparents owned a "steel manufacturing business in India, making pots and pans."

Shah is married to Jill Shah, and the couple resides in Boston with their two kids. 

Jill Shah, who now manages MINDBODY's Boston office, sold her alternative medicine directory Jill's List, which employed seven people, to the California-based company in 2013. 

The Shah Family Foundation, which funds initiatives in healthcare and education, was established by Niraj Shah and Jill in 2017.

 

6. Aneel Bhusri (Net Worth: $2.3 Billion)

One of the richest billionaires and businesspeople of Indian heritage is Aneel Bhusri, co-founder and CEO of Workday Inc. 

He attended Brown University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering there. 

The Stanford Graduate School of Business awarded him an MBA. After getting his MBA from Stanford, he started working as a corporate financial analyst at Morgan Stanley.

Bhusri is a member of the board of directors at Intel.

He also has a partner position at Greylock, a company that has made investments in household names including Facebook, Airbnb, Tumblr, and Groupon. 

His fortune has significantly grown, going from $1.85 billion in 2018 to $2.3 billion in 2020. 

He currently resides in San Francisco, California. 

He co-founded Workday with Dave Duffield, the founder of PeopleSoft.

In 2013, He was the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award Recipient. In 2020, he bagged grabbed the Great Place to Work CEO For All Leadership Award.


7. Kavitark Ram Shriram (Net Worth: $2.3 Billion)

Kavitark Ram Shriram, who was born in Chennai, India, is one of the most well-known investors of Indian descent in California and has a net worth of $2.3 billion. 

Kavitark, one of the first Google investors, graduated from Chennai's Loyola College with a degree in mathematics.

He worked for Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon and one of the richest men in the world, before making his $250,000 investment in Google. 

Sherpalo was founded in 2000 as a venture capital firm for software entrepreneurs by Shriram, who serves on the board of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. by giving Stanford University an incredible $61 million contribution.

Sheth serves as co-chair of the environmental and animal protection organization Global Wildlife Conservation in Austin. 

Before launching his own company, Sheth worked for Bain Capital, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, and Goldman Sachs.

One of the richest self-made businesswomen in the US, Jayshree Ullal is the only Indian-born woman in the Forbes billionaires club. 

Due to her $1.43 billion net worth, Ullal, the president and CEO of the computer networking business Arista Networks, was listed on Forbes' 2018 list of billionaires.

Sudarajan Vedantham, a scientist, is Jayshree's father, and Nirmala Vedantham is her mother. 

Her father is credited as being one of the Indian Institutes of Technology's founders. 

She was born and spent her first five years of life in London before moving to India to finish her education at the Covent of Jesus & Mary in New Delhi.

She immigrated to the US when she was 16 years old and graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in electrical engineering. 

When Cisco Systems purchased Crescendo Communications, Ullal's career received a major boost, and she was given the title of senior vice president of Data Center & Switching. 

She got a master's in engineering management from Santa Clara University.


10. Bharat Desai (Net Worth: $1.27 Billion)

Bharat Desai was raised in Ahmedabad, India, but was born in Kenya. 

He graduated from IIT Bombay with a degree in electrical engineering before pursuing his MBA in finance at the University of Michigan's Stephen M. Ross School of Business. 

He co-founded Syntel, and in 2018 he was ranked as the tenth richest Indian American millionaire.

Desai invested $2,000 to launch Syntel, which he first managed out of his Michigan apartment. 

He presently resides in Florida and serves on the boards of many organizations, including the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. 

He is one of the Gujarati American community's richest businessmen.
