Ten Smartest Countries In Africa

After Asia, Africa is the continent with the second-highest population. The continent has 52 countries, each with a unique mix of natural and human resources. Africa also has some of the world's most intelligent nations.

The following are Africa's 10 smartest nations based on the findings of the Intelligence Capital Index.

They were assessed based on their performance in three different categories: education, creativity, and talent acquisition.

The readiness and capacity of the nations on this list to profit from the knowledge economy also served as a criterion for their ranking. 

Our ranking goes from descending to ascending order.


10. Namibia

Both primary and secondary education is free in Namibia. The primary grades are 1–7, and the secondary grades are 8–12.

The country has an Intelligence Capital Index (ICI) score of 18.89.


9. Zambia

Zambia is a landlocked country located at the confluence of Central, Southern, and East Africa.

It scored 18.93 on the Intelligence Capital Index (ICI), making the nation rank ninth position on our list. 


8. Algeria

In North Africa, Algeria holds a medium power position in both regional and global affairs.

Its economy is one of the largest on the continent, and it has the highest human development index of any African country that is not an island.


7. Kenya

Kenya has a Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.555 and is 186th out of 145 countries in the world.

Eight years are spent in primary school in Kenya, where basic formal education starts at age six and lasts for 12 years, and four years are spent in high school or secondary schools. Free primary education is available.

Kenya scored 19.31 on the Intelligence Capital Index (ICI), making it the smartest country in the east and the seventh smartest country in Africa.


6. Egypt


In this transcontinental nation that straddles the northeastern corner of Africa and the southwestern corner of Asia, every child has the right to fundamental education, starting at age six.

Six years of primary school and three years of prep school make up a basic education.

According to the Intelligence Capital Index (ICI), with a score of 21.55, Egypt is the sixth smartest country in Africa.


5. Morocco

Since gaining independence, Morocco has maintained a largely successful and stable state.

The economy of the nation, which is ranked fifth in Africa, has a significant impact on both the African and Arab continents.

In Morocco, attendance at elementary schools is required and free.

In 2012, estimates indicate that 72% of people were literate.

According to the Intelligence Capital Index (ICI), with a score of 22.57, Morocco is the fifth smartest country in Africa.


4. Botswana


In the late 1960s, Botswana was one of the world's poorest nations, with a GDP per capita of about US$70.

However, due to the nationalism and intelligence of both its leaders and people, it has since developed into an upper-middle-income country with one of the fastest-growing economies.

According to the Intelligence Capital Index, Botswana is the second smartest country in Southern Africa and the fourth smartest country overall (ICI).


3 Tunisia

North African country Tunisia is one of the few in Africa with a high Human Development Index rating.

The overall adult literacy rate increased to 97.3 per cent from 78 per cent in 2008 when only focusing on adults between the ages of 15 and 24.

Education is a high-priority sector that accounts for 6% of GNP. Since 1991, basic education has been mandated for kids between the ages of 6 and 16.

With an Intelligence Capital Index (ICI) of 24.81, Tunisia ranks third among intelligent nations in Africa.


2. Mauritius


The adult literacy rate in Mauritius was estimated to be 92.7% in 2015. Mauritius ranked first in Africa and number 52 overall in the 2020 Global Innovation Index.

The Global Innovation Index ranks countries yearly according to how open and successful they are to innovation.

The government of Mauritius provides free public education to its citizens from pre-kindergarten through post-secondary levels.

Mauritius's score on the Intelligence Capital Index is 31.70. (ICI).


1. South Africa

South Africa ranks as a developing country (114th) on the Human Development Index.

Its school enrollment rate is among the highest in all of Africa. Also, when it comes to Africa, this country has produced the most Nobel laureates.

South Africa is thus the smartest country in Africa.
