Tension As Governing Council Removes Toyin Ogundipe As Unila

The Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Dr. Wale Babalakin, and other members of the University Governing Council have perfected plans to remove Professor Toyin Ogundipe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Announcing the development in a statement on Wednesday,  Professor Olukemi Odukoya, a Senate Representative in Council charged the University of Lagos community to arise and defend the management of the University.

According to Odukoya, Babalakin asked the Vice-Chancellor and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor to leave the venue of the meeting while other council members voted for his removal.

"It is of great regret that I announce to you that the Pro-Chancellor has had his way in actualising his machinery to remove the vice Chancellor.

"At today's 12th August 2020, Emergency Meeting of Council in Abuja, Dr. Babalakin asked the VC and DVC (DS) to leave the meeting and by a vote of 6 to 4, announced that the Vice-Chancellor has been removed.

"Members, arise, this is unacceptable. We must defend the Management of the University," the statement read.

Also Confirming the removal of Ogundipe, one of the  Governing Council members who narrated the drama that ensued at the meeting said:

“The Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and others were asked to leave the conference room for the debate of the report after others had insisted on taking the agenda one after the other as listed.

“As soon as we moved out, there were seven members left in the meeting and the Council Chairman asked them to vote via WhatsApp for the removal of the VC. It was an ambush.”

However, there are reports that a top figure in the Presidency is currently appealing to the council to shelve the idea of removing Prof Ogundipe as VC of UNILAG.
