'The Little Things': A Spoiler-Free Review

'The Little Things': A Spoiler-Free Review

Directed by John Lee Hancock, The Little Things is an underwhelming neo-noir crime thriller that suffers from pacing issues and an unsatisfying conclusion.

Starring Denzel WashingtonRami Malek, and Jared Leto, the movie sees a County Deputy Sheriff combine forces with a young detective in an attempt to solve a series of murders in 1990s Los Angeles.

As a lover of crime thrillers, this was a movie I looked forward to seeing, especially because of Washington's involvement. Unfortunately, his great acting skills can't help the film from plunging down into an abyss, leaving the viewer discontented.

To be fair to the director, the plot is intriguing. It is the execution that is the problem. Right from the opening scene, the film drags but picks up itself midway, only to fall again, never to rise.

I am a Denzel Washington fan because the dude has steadily proven himself in a career that has spanned decades. Here, he fails to impress (a rare thing really), playing a character who is as uninteresting as a forgotten school desk. His acting is fine, but perhaps it is the way it is written that is the problem.

As for Rami Malek, he seems miscast in the role as there was nothing he did that convinced me he was a cop. This was a surprise considering his award-winning performance in Bohemian Rhapsody.

The only real spark in The Little Things is Jared Leto, who seems to keep the viewer enthralled with his unnerving gaze and wacky persona. You just can't keep your eyes off him as you get the feeling that there is always something up his sleeve.

Leto plays a man who becomes the prime suspect in the case. With the way the plot progressed, I expected that the conclusion would involve his character doing something remarkable. Alas! That was never to come to pass.

In all, this movie fails to leave an impression. It is a wasted effort of something that could have been more, given the caliber of its main characters.

Rating: 5/10.
