The Southern Mantra Campaign And Akeredolu's Ills

The Southern Mantra Campaign And Akeredolu's Ills

As the 2023 presidential election approaches thick and fast, Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu joined the league of politicians who campaign based on southern validation. This is unpalatable to Nigeria's democracy.

In his recent outing, he begged potential voters in Ondo North Senatorial district to consider voting for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, because he holds the onlly widl card for a southern.

Akeredolu said it is important that voters do not allow the surge for southern presidency to go to waste so they should all troop out en masse to propel the party’s presidential candidate to victory.

But we need to tell ourselves as a people that the idea of the unconstitutional arrangement of presidential powers we are selling into our politics is destructive.

Ethnicity, religion or race should not be a yardstick for voting for our president.

When the president executes a policy, it does not affect specific races. It cuts across all and sundry.

According to Akeredolu, it is the turn of the South to produce the next president after the eight years of northerners in the saddle.

What happens to that brilliant chap with a brain from other regions who also think he or she could take Nigeria to the promised land?

Regardless of region or race, the best president of Nigeria at this crucial time is the one with experience in the private and public sectors with the desire to turn things around.

The country would not be fair under politics and campaigns motivated by ethnicity.

It will only prosper on development politics and issue-based national discourse.

But the mojo the 2023 general election is giving is a divisive one.

A pursuit that could mar the equity, justice and fairness the south-north rotation is even trying to avert.

Chairman of the party in the State, Ade Adetimehin, said Owo indigenes are known for their roles in standing for justice and equality in the country’s democracy.

Whether the pedlers of politics based on ethnicity like it or not, AllNews Nigeria is using this medium to inform you all that it is a wrong path.
