Thousands Evacuated As Devastating Dam Destruction In Ukrain

A Russian-held dam in Ukraine was destroyed, resulting in the flooding of dozens of villages and parts of a nearby city.

The catastrophic event prompted the evacuation of thousands of people amid fears of a humanitarian disaster.

Ukrainian police and troops in Kherson city embarked on rescue missions, utilizing inflatable boats to bring people out from inundated areas.

Individuals were forced to leave with minimal belongings, clutching important documents and their beloved pets.

The breach of the Kakhovka dam caused immense devastation and tragic experiences for the affected residents. Nataliya Korzh, a 68-year-old woman, swam a portion of the way to escape her flooded house.

She described the nightmare of witnessing her rooms submerged, with floating appliances and belongings to AFP.

Central streets of Kherson were submerged, and the ground floors of buildings became inundated with water.

The rescue operation was also accompanied by the sound of frequent shelling, as the city had been occupied by Russian forces in the past.
