Thousands Of Australians Sign Petition Against Netflix Show 'Hot Instagrammers'

Thousands Of Australians Sign Petition Against Netflix Show

Disgruntled Australian locals in their thousands have signed a petition against Hot Instagrammers, a 'docu-soap' coming to Netflix, tagging it misleading and detrimental to the people of Byron Bay.

Netflix announced plans to shoot the series via a press release on April 7, 2021, and it resulted in opposition in the form of an online petition which has gotten over 6,700 signatures as of Monday, April 19.

Byron Bay is a beach town in Australia and CNN reports that locals in the area put together a petition, calling on local authorities to refuse to grant filming permits and rescind any that may have been granted, pointing out that the show would have a detrimental impact on the community and the environment.

In its statement about the series, Netflix had said: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that an influencer in possession of a good follower count must be in want of a beach backdrop.

"Byron Bay is the perfect setting for our next Australian Netflix Original which will follow hot Instagrammers living their best lives."

Addressing Netflix's planned show, residents of the area said in their petition, "We are a community experiencing significant challenges driven by influencer culture and rapidly shifting demographics of residents.

"We do not want to be cast as the perfect backdrop and magnet for social media influencers. We do not want to appear in 'Byron Baes'.

The petition urges the authorities to "address systemic issues of housing affordability, coastal erosion, increasing unemployment, traffic management challenges, low high school completion rates, and high levels of gender and domestic violence."

Ben Gordon, the owner of the Byron Bay General Store spoke to CNN affiliate 7News and said he turned down the opportunity for his business to be featured in the series.

"They're making up their own narrative, drama, and gossip and the outcome will paint a completely misleading and detrimental image of what Byrin is", he stated.
