THROWBACK: 10 Unforgettable Classic Nigerian Songs

There are some classic songs released back in the day that still give us goosebumps anytime they are blasted on the stereo.

We have selected 10 of the most iconic songs that you will feel nostalgic about.

10. Dem Mama - Timaya

'Dem Mama' was off Timaya's album 'True Story' released in 2007 and was produced by KSolo.

Describing the song in an interview posted in August 2013, Timaya said: "'Dem Mama' was an account of the 1999 destruction of Odi, a riverside community in Niger Delta. Soldiers were hunting down militants they allegedly killed eight policemen. The village was burnt down and numerous people were killed. I bravely tackled the issue years later and won instant street credibility for my boldness."

9. Strong Thing - Banky W

This song was released in 2009 by Banky W and it went on to become one of the most streamed and trendy love songs of the year.

8. Ego - Djinee

This track is an afro R&B soul song by Djinee from the album 'Westside Bootleg Volume 1' (2006). Although he went on to release other songs such as 'I no dey shame', none of these singles could match the success of his hit song, 'Ego'.

7. Yori Yori - Bracket

'Yori Yori' is one of the songs that rocked every part of the country decades ago. It was released by the duo, Bracket, in 2018 off their debut album, 'Least Expected'.

6. Fall in Love - D'banj

'Fall in Love' is a hit track from D'banj's third studio album 'The Entertainer'. It was released in 2008 by Mo'Hits Records and produced by Don Jazzy.

5. Olufunmi - Styl Plus

'Olufunmi' was the biggest hit song of the now-defunct R&B music group, Styl Plus. The single was off the group's highly-acclaimed EP which was released in 2004. 'Olufunmi' was among the most requested love songs on all the major Nigerian R&B radio stations between 2004 and 2005.

4. Yahooze - Olu Maintain

Olu Maintain's single 'Yahooze' was released on October 27, 2007, and produced by Puffy Tee as the lead single from his debut album of the same name. The song was accompanied by a dance move with the same name. Even though the song and dance subtly allude to it,  the dance move came at a time when internet fraud was not so rampant in the country.

'Yahooze' won Hottest Single of the Year at the 2008 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

3. Kolomental - Faze

'Kolomental' was released in 2006 but became a hit song in 2007. It was the lead single off Faze’s sophomore album, 'Independent'. The musical work also happens to be Faze's best-selling album and the biggest (most sold) album of the year 2007.

2. Bizzy Body - P-Square

'Bizzy Body' was the monster hit song released in May 2005 by the now-defunct 'P-Square' group consisting of the twin brothers, Peter and Paul featuring Waje. It was off their album titled 'Get Squared'.

1. African Queen - 2Baba

2face's song 'African Queen' is arguably one of the biggest and best songs to come out of Nigeria. It sold up to 2 million copies in Nigerian and was widely accepted internationally. The song was released in 2004 of his first solo album 'Face 2 Face.

'African Queen' got 2face (now called 2Baba) numerous awards including Best African Act at the 2005 Kora Award and Best Song of the Year at the 2005 G.C.E International Award.

The song was later used in 2006 as a soundtrack in the Hollywood movie 'Phat Girlz' as a result of its wide acceptance.
