Throwback: Top 10 Evergreen Nollywood Movies

 

Although there have been advancements in technology, a bit switch in storylines, use of characters, etc, the Nollywood industry has done well in past productions.

Taking you back to the days of canoe shoes, days of cassette recorders when rewinders or biros were used to rewind the tapes to your desired point.

Back in those days, there are some epic movies you can’t but wish to watch over and over, probably because of their storylines or characters.

Below are some movies

Diamond Ring

Talking about movies that rocked TV screens in those days and one of the greatest films ever, Diamond Ring is arguably one.

The film was directed by Tade Ogidan and featured comedian, Teju Babyface, veteran actors, Liz Benson Richard Mofe-Damijo and Bukky Ajayi.

Diamond Ring talks the story of a young man Chidi (Teju Babyface) who was convinced to join a cult group, thereafter asked to rob from a corpse who had a diamond ring on. The 1998 movie was shot across Nigeria and London.

 

Osuofia in London

This very comedy movie was produced in 2003 and tells the story of a hunter, Osuofia (Nkem Owoh)  who travelled from Nigeria to London, just to inherit his late brother’s wealth after he was made the sole beneficiary.

On arriving London, Osuofia finds his late brother’s fiancée Samantha who accompanied him back to Nigeria, but somewhat had difficulty coping with African tradition and aggression from the hunter’s wife.

Isakaba
Back then in the year 2000, Isakaba rocked TV screens and anyone who was yet to see it was definitely not current enough. It talks about a group of vigilantes (Bakassi boys) led by Ebube who had supernatural powers, employed to rid the land of corruption.

The men are protected by charm to enable them avoid injury from criminals’ bullet and to detect innocence or guilt through the magic use of their machetes.

The movie is full of action, horror and drama.

 

 

Thunderbolt

The 105 minutes film in English, Igbo and Yoruba language talks the story of a young Igbo lady and Yinka, a young Yoruba man, who fell in love during their National Youth Service scheme.

Their marital life faces issues of alleged extra-marital affairs which destroys trust between a devoted Ngozi and a jealous Yinka.

Ngozi is laced with “Magun”, the mysterious and fatal chastity control (Magun) which will make her sexual victim die instantly after sexual intercourse.

 

Karashika

This movie was arguably the most talked about in 1996. Karishika, a horror film is the story of a  girl "Karishika" sent by Lucifer to the world to come and kill, destroy and tempt people in order to increase the population in hell. It features acts like Bob Manuel Udokwu, Becky Okorie, Sandra Achums, Obi Mmadubugo, Amaechi Muonagor, Sunny Mc-Don, among others.

Saworoide
The 105 minutes film produced in 1999 talks of the Jogbo Kingdom. Upon getting to the throne, the king, Lapite portrays himself to be a corrupt ruler. This classic film examines the political ills in post-independence Nigeria.
 The sequel to Saworoide is "Agogo Ewo" which sees the downfall of Lapite.

Suicide Mission
Directed by Fred Amata,  anytime one remembers this movie, what comes to their mind is a man locked in a bottle.

It tells the story of Regina Askia who used supernatural powers to lock RMD in a bottle all in the name of love. She also turned into a dog at the end.

Blood Money
Lack of money or job absolutely gets one frustrated and may lead one into illegal activity.  Such is the case of a man who lost his job as a banker. His quest to make ends meet leads him into rituals and blood money.

The film was produced in 1997 and directed by Chico Ejiro.

 

Living In Bondage
A man who is not pleased with his situation, out of desperation to be rich follows a friend's advice and delved into joining a satanic cult. He had to pay the price of sacrificing his wife to Lucifer in exchange for wealth, but his life eventually crumbles.

 

Glamour Girls
The central idea of this movie  directed Chika Onukwufor is sex and money. Veterans Eucharia Anunobi, Zack Orji, Liz Benson, Dolly Unachukwu, Gloria Alozie and others starred in the film.
