Thunderstorm Kills Seven Cows In Osun State

In the early hours of Tuesday, about seven cows belonging to a Fulani herder, Alhaji Abdullahi, in Elepo Village, Ifon, Osun State were struck dead by a thunderstorm.

Villagers have been thrown into panic as the incident occurred during an early morning rain.

According to reports, a loud deafening noise was heard around where the animals were kept. Seven cows were found dead after the incident, though other cows that were tethered at the spot were not affected.

Alao Saheed, a resident of Ifon, said it was the first time such an incident would occur in the town.

He, therefore, called on relevant government agencies to come to the scene of the incident and remove the dead animals to prevent an outbreak of an epidemic.

It could be recalled that an incident like this happened on 23rd of November 2019 at Iba in Ifelodun LGA of Osun state where lightning reportedly killed no fewer than 19 cows.

According to the report, the Fulani herdsmen were rearing their cows on the field when the incident happened. It was learnt that all the 19 cows on the field died.

In his reaction to the incident, the monarch of the town, Oba Adekunle Oyedeji, sympathized with the victims, while urging them to burn the dead cows to avoid an outbreak of epidemic.

Also, on the 21st of September 2019, there was a thunderstorm in Oke-Owa, Ijare community in Ifedore local government in Ondo state that killed no fewer than 36 cows.

Community leaders suggested that the disaster was due to the desecration of the sacred shrine by Fulani herders who intruded into the shrine of the ancient deity.

Despite the supernatural interpretation by the traditionalists, police said the thunderstorm that killed the cows was a natural disaster.
