Liverpool legend, Steve Nicol, says it is a mistake for his former club missing out on talented German, Timo Werner.
AllNews understands that Chelsea have offered a £200,000-a-week contract to striker Werner who has a €55m (£49.4m) release clause which expires on June 15.
The Blues have agreed on a deal in principle to sign Werner from RB Leipzig of Germany.
Highly-wanted Werner is set to join Hakim Ziyech, who is joining from Ajax for £33m on July 1, as new additions at Stamford Bridge this summer following their transfer ban being lifted by FIFA in December last year.
"I think it is [a mistake], yes," Nicol told ESPN FC recently.
"Regardless of how good you are, you have to make sure you stay where you are at the very least. That means you need competition for places.
"No question, Werner would have given the front three - as great as they are and have been - it would have kept them on their toes.
"The front three of Liverpool can now breathe a little easier.
"I think Liverpool have slipped up here.
"Saying that, I wouldn't be surprised if Werner had something to do with this.

"At the end of the day, if you want to go somewhere you can make it happen. It looks to me like Werner has changed his mind."
