Tiv Leader Accuses Politicians Of Inaction, Silence On Incessant Killings In Nasarawa

Tiv Leader Accuses Politicians Of Inaction, Silence On Inces

Armed Herdsmen

Speaking on Sunday, the president of the Tiv Development Association in Nasarawa State condemned the silence of politicians in the state on the continuous killings of the Tiv people living in its communities.

Comrade Peter Ahemba, the president of the Tiv Development Association (TIDA) in Nasarawa State has accused politicians of supporting the ongoing attacks on Tiv communities by remaining silent about the problem.

He claimed that the failure of the leaders in the state to intervene or denounce the crimes had given the culprits the confidence to wreak havoc on Tiv villages in several regions of the state by posing as herdsmen.

The approach was taken in light of recent attacks on villages in the state's Keana and Obi local governments, which resulted in several casualties.

In one of the attacks that happened on Friday night, gunmen who attacked Gidan Ityotyev, a Tiv agricultural settlement in the state's Obi Local Government Area, thought to be herders, killed a man and severed a woman's breast.

Ahemba noted during a visit to Ityotyev to express her sympathies that some lawmakers' silence in the state's southern senatorial district in the face of a persistent campaign of violence against the Tiv people was suspicious.

He claimed that such politicians, who have little to no sympathy for the unjustified attacks against the Tiv people, will eventually approach the devastated survivors of the tracks to ask for their votes.

“Why are the attacks targeted mainly on Tiv farmers and why has it become a recurring decimal that our people are displaced in every election year?

“It is now obvious that the selective attacks and killing of innocent Tiv farmers have a political undertone.

"The conspiracy of silence from our representatives at both state and national levels is true and worrisome.

“We have so far lost twenty-one of our kinsmen from across Doma, Keana and Obi LGAs within the last two months due to brutal attacks by armed herdsmen with many others sustaining varying degrees of injuries.

“Unfortunately, none of our representatives either the State or National Assembly has openly condemned the ugly development, apart from Chairmen of the affected LGAs, who have been doing their best to ensure peace,” he said.

Nevertheless, he praised the state governor, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, for his tenacious efforts to bring calm to the affected districts and urged even more forceful action in this regard.
