Tobi Amusan Becomes First Nigerian Nominated For Laureus Wor

Tobi Amusan

World Champion Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan has made history by becoming the first Nigerian ever to be nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Award in the Breakthrough of the Year category.

This coveted award, established in 2000, recognizes the year's most outstanding and inspirational sporting achievements and highlights the efforts of Laureus Sport for Good.

Amusan's nomination is a testament to her exceptional talent and hard work.

Last year, she achieved the incredible feat of becoming Nigeria's first-ever World Record (WR) holder in any track and field event, clocking an impressive 12.12s in the 100m hurdles semi-final at the World Championships in Oregon. Although her final time of 12.06s could have been a new WR, the excessive wind reading made it ineligible.

Her remarkable performances and iconic achievements have not only given the sport a significant boost in Nigeria but also globally.

She is now one of the most influential sportspersons on the African continent, and her outstanding contributions have earned her national recognition. In September 2022, she and other sports athletes were honoured by the President and presented with national honours.
