According to the United Nations, the world human population has hit eight billion

The United Nations announced more hardship in store for regions already facing resource scarcity because of climate change and the surge in human population growth. 

Reaching eight billion people is “a sign of human success, but it’s also a great risk for our future,” said John Wilmoth, the director of the UN’s population division

Below are the top 10 countries of the world with the highest human population in 2022. Our ranking goes from descending to ascending order. 

10. Mexico (127 Million)

Guanajuato, Mexico

Mexico takes the number 10 spot among the top 10 countries of the world with the highest human population. 

It has a population of 127million. The capital city of Mexico city has a population of over 12 million and it is the most populous city in Mexico. 

It is also the only city with over 10 million population in the country.

Mexico is a tourist magnet attracting millions of tourists each year. It is one of the most visited countries in the world.

9. Russia (144 Million)

Moscow, Russia

The human population of Russia is 144 million and reports say Russia's population will decline by a few million this decade. 

The majority of the Russian population is concentrated in the Western part of the country. The capital city of Moscow is the only city in Russia with over 10 million population.

8. Bangladesh (171 Million) 

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Coming at number eighth spot on this list, Bangladesh has a population of 171 million.

It is also the sixth most densely populated country in the World. After 2050, Bangladesh’s population will stabilize and begin declining just like India.

7. Brazil (215 Million)

Brazil was once the sixth most populous country in the world, however, due to mortality, human fertility and global change, Brazil's population has declined by a few million. 

It is the first South American country on this list and has a population of around 215 million. It is the seventh-largest country in the world by area. 

Just like the USA, Brazil is also less densely populated. Moreover, Brazil’s population will most likely begin declining shortly after 2050, according to United Nations. 

6. Nigeria (220 Million)

Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa used to be the seventh country in the world with the highest human population, however, recent population statistic has placed Nigeria above Brazil which once occupied the sixth spot. 

The country is said to have one of the fastest-growing populations in the world. Nigeria will jump to number three on this list around 2050.

Currently, Nigeria’s population is 220 million.

5. Pakistan (237 Million)

Pakistan, a country in South Asia with a rapidly rising population has a human population of 237 million.

It is expected to overtake Indonesia in terms of population numbers in a few decades.

The majority population of Pakistan is concentrated in the Punjab and Sindh provinces of the country. 

4. Indonesia (276 Million) 

Jakarta, Indonesia

Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia with several thousand islands.

The islands of Java and Sumatra are the most populated and makeup almost 79 per cent of the total population of Indonesia.

The total population of Indonesia is 276 million.

3. United States of America (338 Million)

New York, USA

Although the USA is number three on this list, its population is way less than China and India. 

The US has a population of 338 million. With a large land area, the US is not very densely populated as most countries on this list. It is also the third most visited country in the world.

2. India (1.420 Billion)

India is not far behind China to take the number two spot on this list and is getting close to having 1.5 billion people. 

In 2050, India will most certainly hold the title of the most populous nation on Earth.

One thing to note is that India has a population density that is far higher than China's despite having a nearly one-third smaller land area.

1. China (1.425 Billion)

Shanghai, China

China takes the number one spot on this list as the most populated country in the world with a population of 1.425 billion people. 

It is also the fourth largest nation in the world in terms of area.

According to the United Nations, China’s population has somewhat stabilized and is expected to begin declining after 2030.
