Some animals are built specifically to be the ultimate speed machines.
Some of them run on earth, while others fly or swim in the air. The majority of the fastest animals are birds, but the list below contains some of these other animal species as well.
These are the ten world's fastest animals.
The Brown Hare can run at 77kph (48mph), which is the same speed as their predator, the red fox, thanks to their large rear legs.
The greatest speed of a lion is almost exactly equalled by the Blue Wildebeest, Springbok, and Thompson's Gazelle, which can all run at roughly 80kph (50mph).
The world's fastest fish, the Sail Fish, recently defeated the marlin, which can swim at 80kph (50mph).
The Pronghorn antelope can outsprint predators at 98kph (60mph), making it the second-fastest terrestrial animal.
With a top speed of 110kph (68mph), the sail fish is unquestionably the world's fastest fish.
The cheetah can run as fast as 113 kph and is adept at pursuing moving prey (70mph). That is over three times faster than the human best running speed of 36kph (22mph)!
No other big cat has a skill like cheetahs.
The Spur-Winged Goose is the largest in the world and has a top speed of 142 kph (88mph).
The biggest wingspan to body weight ratio of any bird contributes to the frigate bird's speed of 153kph (95mph). They can stay in the air for more than a week straight!
With the highest recorded speed of 171kph/106mph, the White Throated Needletail, also referred to as the Spine Tailed Swift is the fastest bird using powered flight.
When the Peregrine Falcon performs its hunting dive, known as a stoop, in which it soars to tremendous heights before diving sharply at speeds of over 322 kph, it is both the fastest bird and the fastest mammal on Earth (200mph).
It can go at up to 90 kph when cruising horizontally (56mph).
