1. After the Minister for FCT, Nyesom Wike, stated that security operatives identified a Senator sponsoring #Endbadgovernance protests, the Senator representing the FCT, Ireti Kingibe, has denied culpability. It would be recalled that a video had gone viral alleging that she was sponsoring the protest. But Senator Kingibe described it as “misinformation”.
2. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has told the #EndBadGovernance protesters to call off their actions because their voices have been “heard, loud and clear.” He praised what he called peaceful conduct of the protesters in Lagos State, saying they have chosen peace and shunned the path of destruction.
3. Kano police has detained atleast 320 individuals allegedly involved in vandalizing public buildings during the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests. SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the command’s spokesman, revealed this information during a parade of the suspects at the police headquarters on Friday.
4. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced that the UK government's plans to increase the family visa threshold from £29,000 to £38,700 has been postponed. The policy, initially set to begin in 2025, was introduced earlier this year by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in response to record immigration levels.
5. A yet-to-be-identified police officer has been mistakenly killed by his colleague who was firing gunshots at protesters in Katsina state. A video making rounds on Friday shows the Police officer in his uniform lying in a pool of blood after being shot by his colleague.
6. One male victim of an improvised explosive device attack in Maiduguri died, while eleven others were injured to varying degrees, according to the Borno Police Command. This was revealed on Friday by Police Commissioner Yusuf Lawal in a situation report to the News Agency of Nigeria.
7. The coalition of pro-democracy groups for a better Nigeria has urged President Bola Tinubu to address the nation in the wake of the violence and looting that greeted the ongoing protest. The national coordinator of the coalition, Awa Bamiji, in a statement on Friday, August 2, in Lagos, called on the president to take a decisive action by addressing the nation today to stop the protest.
8. President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas (MON) has announced the lifting of ban place on film producer, Adanma Luke. Alnews.ng can recall that Adanma is the producer of ‘Another Side of Life,’ which was under production before the death of Junior Pope and four other crew members.
9. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered security operatives to unveil and bring to book the author of a viral post on X asking Igbo people to leave Lagos State or face massive protests. The Governor said this while condemning the post asking all Igbos to vacate Lagos State, or face massive protests slated to be held from August 20th-30th, 2024.
10. The Police in Kano have confirmed that some of the owners of looted and vandalised property during the first day of the EndBadGovernance protest are currently receiving treatment at the hospitals.
