Top 10 Richest Local Governments In Nigeria

Nigeria is blessed with many lovely states and each of them is home to numerous local governments. There are 774 local governments in the country.

We take into account, among other things, the population, employment rates, GDP, and source of revenue generation when discussing the wealthiest local government in Nigeria.

The top 10 richest local governments in Nigeria will be covered in this article.

However, this list will be in no particular order.

1. Bonny Island Local Government, Rivers State

Bonny Island is one of the most beautiful places in the South. It is located at the southernmost point of Rivers State and is renowned for its cutting-edge infrastructure.

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Plant (NLNG) is located on Bonny Island, one of the wealthiest local governments in Nigeria, which probably explains why Bonny is the only Nigerian city with a reliable energy supply.

Ferries are the main means of getting to and from the island. Bonny Island and Bonny Town's native tongue is Ibani, but many locals are also fluent in Igbo.

2. Ibadan Northwest, Oyo State

Ibadan, the largest city in West Africa also houses one the richest local government in Nigeria. 

Ibadan Northwest local government is one of the most developed local governments in Nigeria and is home to the first skyscraper and television station in all of tropical Africa.

The Lagos-Ibadan rail, Nigeria's first railway, has its terminal in Ibadan Northwest LG as well.

3. Calabar Municipal Local Government, Cross Rivers State 

Calabar Municipal is another notable and prosperous LGA in Nigeria with a sizeable portion of its land area set aside for its booming economy.

The LG is located in the State of Cross Rivers and is renowned for its green reserves.

Along with having well-paved roads, it is bordered by many fantastic tourist attractions, including the Calabar Tinapa and the Obudu cattle ranch.    

4. Lagos Island Local Government, Lagos State

The Lagos Island Local Government Area is one of the richest LGAs in Nigeria. It is also often called Isale-Eko. 

The southwest region of Nigeria is where it is situated. Recent statistics indicate that there are 476,028 residents in Lagos Island LG. 

Lagos Island was formerly known as the Brazilian Quarter of Lagos because Brazilians made up a large portion of its population during the slave trade. 

Nigerians now make up the majority of Lagos Island's population, which also includes banks, corporations, and other business organizations.

The Tom Jones Memorial Hall and Library, which are on Marina Road, are among the notable institutions situated on Lagos Island.

5. Abuja Municipal Local Government, Abuja.

The capital of Nigeria, Abuja, also has some of the richest local governments in the country.

This is made possible by the fact that Abuja is home to notable and prominent Nigerians such as kings, politicians, businessmen and women. 

In addition to the president, it is home to several well-known politicians, including senators, representatives, and members of the executives. 

The Abuja Municipal Local Government Area serves as the regional headquarters for both the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The Local Government Area is distinguished by well-planned, broad streets, enormous skyscraper structures, and evenly spaced homes.

There are many five-star hotels in Abuja Municipal LG including the Agura Hotel, the Hilton Nicon, and the Sheraton Abuja. Additionally, it provides lavish tourist and leisure attractions. 

6. Eti Osa Local Government, Lagos, State

On our list of the richest local government in Nigeria, it shouldn't come as a surprise to see two to three of these local governments come from Lagos State. 

Lagos State itself is the richest state in Nigeria having the highest GDP among all the other States in Nigeria. 

The Lagos State Government Council is one of many Councils that are housed by the local government.

Over 280,000 people are residents of Eti-Osa Local Government. this population accounts for over 3% of all residents of Lagos State. 

The richest people in Africa, including Mike Adenuga and Aliko Dangote, as well as the richest woman in Nigeria, Folorunsho Alakija, have built homes in Eti-Osa LG. 

The majority of these well-known and wealthy Nigerians' businesses are concentrated in Eti-Osa Local Government, making it one of the wealthiest local governments in Nigeria.

7. Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Lagos State

Numerous facilities and centres, including those dedicated to sports, can be found in the Ibeju-Lekki LG.

A 12 MW power plant is being constructed in Ibeju-Lekki, a significant commercial area. 

Ibeju-Lekki Local Government is well known for its booming economy and the local government is notable for:

The Pan-Atlantic University, Lekki Deep Seaport, Eleganza industries, Lekki International Gulf Course, LUFASI nature parks, the ongoing project of the Dangote Refinery which is estimated to be the world’s biggest single-train facility, and also estimated cost of $9 billion to build has its location in Ibeju-Lekki local government. 

8. Uyo Local Government, Akwa Ibom State

The capital of Akwa-Ibom State is Uyo, it is also a local government area in Akwa Ibom State.

Uyo LG is also one of the richest local governments in Nigeria. 

The local government is home to several reputable infrastructures which include, Godswill Akpabio Stadium, IBB Way, Atiku Abubakar Avenue, Udo Udoma Avenue, and Edet Akpan Avenue.

9. Ikeja Local Government, Lagos State 

Ikeja Local Government which is the Lagos State capital is also one of the richest local government areas in Nigeria. 

It has a high level of development, it is home to numerous businesses and organizations, industrial areas, and notable individuals.

The Lagos State Government House, the busiest airport in West Africa, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja City Mall, and Nigeria's largest ShopRite store are just a few of Ikeja's notable landmarks.

Also one of the largest computer stores in Nigeria, Computer Village, is in Ikeja. In computer village, you can find a wide range of items, including computers, tech accessories, gadgets and much more.

10. Obio Akpor Local Government, Rivers State

This list won't be complete without the Obio-Akpor local government in Rivers State, Nigeria.

The Niger Delta region’s economic headquarter is located in Obio Akpor. Two of Nigeria's biggest refineries can be found here.

The Local Government is also home to offices of several oil and gas companies. Obio-Akpor, which refines the majority of the oil extracted in Nigeria, could be said to be one of the country’s financial hearts.
