Top 5 Nigerian Reality Shows We Miss On TV Screens (Videos)

Reality television shows oftentimes educative and entertaining have an inexplicable quality that makes it utterly addicting to watch. The power of reality television is undeniable and the influence it has cannot be overemphasized.

Apart from the entertainment and educative values, some of the shows have given a huge number of celebrities who rose to fame through their participation in reality shows. For instance, the likes of Darey, Inyanya, Ayoola, Chidinma, and other singers were able to showcase their talents through those shows.

The reality television genre has become a massive televised event of competition shows and nosiness. You want to fall in love? Go on TV. Do you have a crush on a top star? Go on TV.  You want to get your own slogan, Go on TV!

Some of the shows are put up by top brands for the promotion of their products.

AllNews takes a walk down the memory lane and brings you the reality shows that once rocked our TV screens and wish we could have back.

 

1. Gulder Ultimate Search

Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS) was created and sponsored by Nigerian Breweries Plc to promote the Gulder Lager Beer. Ultimate search which was premiered in 2004 is a 100% local content reality television programme in Nigeria.

It highlights the struggle and survival of contestants who are usually between 10 to 30, who are in search of a hidden treasure that brings to the last person standing instant fame and fortune.

The Winner of the last season in 2012 took home a 10 million naira cash prize and an SUV. A major tragedy occurred while shooting the season 4, when a contestant Anthony Ogadje, drowned in a lake in Jos Plateau State.

The celebrity edition of the show was launched in 2010 and the location was Lacapagne Tropicana Epe Lagos. 'The Golden Goblet' was found by the Ace Nollywood Actor Emeka Ike and he went home with the sum of seven million Naira.

Earlier this year, the organiser of the show, announced on their social media handles that they are on a mission to "deliver best lockdown gift."

The announcement stated that the show would be hitting TV screens again, even though it is going to be a rerun edition which will be screened on social media platforms.

However, the screening dates have not been announced.

2. MTN Project Fame

Project Fame, also known as Project Fame West Africa was a show organized by a telecommunication network, MTN, for sponsorship purposes. It is a music show filmed in Lagos and aired in the West African subcontinent. The show used to feature contestants from Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, but Liberia and Sierra Leone have been dropped since the 2014 Ebola Outbreak. The show is broadcast by networks in these four countries and across the African continent.

The inaugural season began in 2008 and the production format consists of gala evenings held each Sunday night in prime time and hosted by Joseph Benjamin and Adaora Oleh.

The jury is formed by three judges; Praiz, Bibie Brew and Tee-Y Mix, and Faculty members of the Academy which include: Joke Silva, Lovette Otegbola, Dupe Ige, and Ben Ogbeiwi.

Top singers like Inyanya won the show in 2008, Ayoola in 2012, and Chidinma Ekile in 2010.

3. Maltina Dance All

Maltina dance which is popularly called MDA sees families come and showcase their talent in dancing, singing, etc. competition.

The family dance show has been performed first in Lagos and Benin, while those in Ibadan, Enugu, Abuja, Ibadan, and Port Harcourt have all experience the show and what the organizer got to offer in terms of entertainment.

Earlier, there were reports that the 2020/2021 edition will kick off without a specific date. Whichever way, we can’t wait to have it grace our TV screens again.

4. Nigerian Idols

The reality show is the local version of the Idol series franchise. The show started with its first season in 2010, the 50th anniversary of the country with the tagline Live Your Dream. Accept No Limitation.

Auditions were open for every Nigerian between 18 and 28. The first season went on air in October 2010 and is shown on 15 different channels all across Africa. It had just 3 seasons.

5. Nigeria's Got Talents

The show was launched in 2012 on AIT and NTA, and sponsored by telecommunication company Airtel. The judges included actress Kate Henshaw, comedian Yibo Koko, and late radio presenter Dan Foster. The auditions take place in front of the judges and a live audience in different Nigerian cities. As the contestant performs, each judge may show their disapproval by pressing a buzzer which lights a red 'X' near above the stage. If all three buzzers are pressed, the act ends immediately.
