Transfer: Depay Switches To Atletico Madrid From Barcelona

Memphis Depay is officially a player of Spanish outfit Atlético Madrid after his former club Barcelona reached an agreement for his transfer.

There were strong indications on Thursday that the 28-year-old Dutch international who had been linked with a move to Atletico in the last few days would seal a permanent deal as he was spotted wearing the club's colours while training under manager Diego Simeone.

 

Barcelona reached an agreement on Friday for the transfer of Depay for the fee of 3 million euros plus one million in variables.

The deal, a two-and-a-half-year contract, also has a clause that gives Barcelona a preferential but not compulsory purchase option of winger Yannick Carrasco this summer.

"FC Barcelona and Club Atlético de Madrid have reached an agreement for the transfer of Depay for the fee of 3 million euros plus one million in variables," a statement reads on Barcelona's website.

"The agreement includes a preferential but not compulsory purchase option for the player Yannick Carrasco.

"FC Barcelona would like to publicly thank Memphis for his commitment and dedication and wishes him all the best for the future."

It is no secret that Depay struggled to replicate his goalscoring ability in Barcelona which made him relegated to the sidelines by manager Xavi Hernandez after the club signed Polish striker Robert Lewandowski last year. 

Before his departure, the former Olympique Lyonnais forward only played in four games in all competitions for Barca during 2022/23. on July 2021 and signed a two-year deal.

However, Depay's move to Atlético will help fill the void in attack following the loan move of Joao Felix to Chelsea.
