Transfer: Relegated Southampton Sign Russell Martin In Reviv

Russell Martin

Southampton have announced the appointment of Russell Martin as their new manager on Wednesday, with the new boss expressing his determination to guide the relegated club back to the Premier League.

Martin, previously at Championship side Swansea, signed a three-year contract with Southampton.

The 37-year-old led Swansea to a respectable 10th-place finish in the Championship last season and has been entrusted with the task of rejuvenating the Saints and returning them to the top flight.

In response to his appointment, Martin expressed his privilege in joining a club with such a rich history and outlined his primary objective of restoring Southampton's place in English football's elite division.

"I am ready for this challenge and will give everything to achieve this aim and to give the supporters a team that makes them proud."

Martin takes over from Ruben Selles, who was sacked at the end of the season, becoming Southampton's fourth manager during a tumultuous campaign that witnessed the dismissals of Ralph Hasenhuttl and Nathan Jones.

The Scottish former defender, who also had a stint with Milton Keynes Dons, was initially set to join Southampton in May but faced delays due to a compensation dispute with Swansea.

While Leicester City, another relegated team, showed interest in Martin, Southampton managed to secure his signature as they aim for promotion in their first Championship season since 2012.

Southampton chairman Henrik Kraft praised Martin as the standout candidate, highlighting his impressive managerial qualities and track record of developing young talent.
