The Nation was thrown into mourning after the 25th Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, alongside 10 other military personnel on board, died in a military plane crash on Friday at about 6:00 PM on Friday, May 21, 2021.

The Aircraft which is identified as Beachcraft 350, crashed at the runway of Kaduna International Airport.

According to the Army, the officers were on their way to Kaduna from Abuja on an official trip when the tragic incident occurred.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to Abuja for burial rights and were laid to rest in full military honours at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

As a way of honouring the heroic military officers who died in the course of their official duty, the Federal Government directed public buildings and facilities to fly the National Flag half-mast.

May 24 was also approved as a work-free day for members of the Armed Forces.

Biography of the Officers Who Died In the Tragic Crash

Lieutenant General Attahiru IbrahimAttahiru Ibrahim was born on August 10, 1966, and was a Nigerian Army Lieutenant General who served as the 25th Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army from January 26, 2021, until his death on May 21, 2021.

Attahiru along with Maj. Gen. Lucky Eluonye Onyenuchea lrabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, the chief of Naval Staff along with Air Vice Marshal Isiaka O. Amao, the current chief of Air staff were confirmed as service chiefs on March 2, 2021.

Before his appointment as a service chief, he was the General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu. He was a member of Regular Course 35 of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He served as the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole until 2017.

Brigadier-General Mohammed Abdulkadir 

He was the principal general staff officer to the Chief of Army Staff. General Abdulkadir was born on April 19, 1971, in Kaduna, but is from Niger State, North-central Nigeria.

He became Brigade-General on August 17, 2017. During the course of his life, he had a collection of honours to his name for his service in the Nigerian Army including the United Nations Operations medal.

Brigadier General Olatunji Olayinka 

The late Brigadier-General Olatunji Olayinka was born on January 13, 1970, and he grew up in Ikorodu part of Lagos State.

Prior to his death, he was the Provost Marshall for the Nigerian Army and rose to the rank of Brigadier-General on September 10, 2017.

Brig Gen Abdulrahman Kuliya

The late Brigadier-General Abdulrahman Kuliya was born on February 2, 1968 in Kano.

He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics, Masters Degree in National Resource Strategy, and also a Masters Degree in Strategy and Security Administration. He rose to the rank of Brigadier-General on September 10, 2017.

Prior to his death, he was the directorate of military intelligence for the Nigerian Intelligence Corp.

Major Lawal Aliyu Hayat

Major Lawal Aliyu Hayat was born on April 11, 1979, and was a native of Zaria Local Government, Kaduna State.

He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Accounting. He rose to the rank of Major on September 27, 2017, and prior to his death, he held several command positions.

Major Nura Hamza

Major Nura Hamza hailed from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State and was born on November 20, 1979, in Kano.

He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Bayero University, Kano. He also held a Master's Degree in Economics, Business Administration, and was an associate member of the National Accountants of Nigeria.

He rose to the rank of a Major on December 2, 2015, and was the acting deputy director of finance up until his untimely death on May 21, 2021.

Sergeant Umar Saidu

Sergeant Umar Saidu was born on December 11, 1985, and was from Das Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

He was posted to the Army Corp of military police after enlisting for the Nigerian Army in 2006.

He rose to the rank of Sergeant in 2017 and served as Orderly to the late Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, until his death.

Flight Lieutenant Olufemi Taiwo Asaniyi

FLT LT Olufemi Taiwo Asaniyi was born on February 25, 1992, in Ibadan and held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the Nigerian Defense Academy.

He became a pilot officer on September 12, 2015, before getting promoted to the rank of Flight-Lieutenant on August 14, 2020.

Before his life was suddenly cut short in the tragic aircraft crash, he was planning his wedding with his Fiance, Bunmi Oladuntoye.

Flight-Lieutenant Alfred Ayodeji Olufade

Alfred Ayodeji Olufade was born on February 19, 1992, and was a native of Kogi State. He held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the Nigeria Defense Academy.

He joined the Nigerian Airforce on August 15, 2009, and was attained the rank of Flight-Lieutenant on August 15, 2019.

He only got married three months before he met his untimely death in the ill-fated aircraft.

Sergeant Adesina Isaiah

The late Sergeant Adesina Isaiah was born in April 1989 in Kaduna. He was recruited into the Air Force on November 2, 2012. Prior to his promotion to the rank of a Sergeant in September 2016, he was a Corporal.

Aircraftman Oyedepo Matthew

ACM Oyedepo Olamide Matthew was born on March 20, 1998, in Osun State. He joined the Nigeria Air Force as a non-tradesman and was initially an aircraft technician.

He completed his basic military training at the Military Training Cente in Kaduna before he was posted to 203 Intelligence, Surveillance and Recognisers Group in Yola. He was later transferred to Abuja before he met with his death.
