Troops eliminate terrorists in northwest, intercept illicit

The Nigerian Army conducted a series of coordinated operations, raiding terrorist sanctuaries in Katsina and Zamfara states, culminating in the killing of a considerable number of terrorists.

The military stated in a message on its official 'X' Twitter on Monday that the operations took place on March 29 and 30.

According to the army, on March 29, forces successfully stormed the hideout of Hassan Yantagwaye, a known terrorist kingpin, in Tsafe Local Government Area.

It went on to say that Yantagwaye and his organisation were responsible for kidnappings and acts of terrorism in some districts of North West Nigeria.

“During the operation, troops overpowered the terrorists in an ensuing gun battle, neutralising three of them and recovering a large cache of arms and ammunition and also destroying the terrorists’ camps.

“In Katsina State, the gallant troops on March 30, engaged in a fierce gun battle with terrorists in Shawu Kuka, Shinda, Tafki, Gidan Surajo, and Citakushi in Kabai I and Kabai II within Faskari Local Government Area.

“The troops neutralised eight terrorists and recovered three locally fabricated guns, military uniforms and a large quantity of stolen grains,” it said.

The army also said that on March 29, its forces intercepted 441 wraps of a material thought to be Cannabis Sativa in Molegede village, Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun.

It stated the attentive forces discovered the illicit chemicals being transported in a Mazda Saloon car after the smugglers fled, leaving the vehicle when they saw the troops.

According to the post, the car and illicit materials will be turned over to the competent authorities following preliminary investigations.

It further stated that on March 31, troops performing night patrols met armed Effium militias along Urban Effium in Eboyin's Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

Also, it was further revealed that the military defeated the militias in the ensuing battle and caught one of them. According to the report, the forces also found an AK-47 rifle and 11 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

“The suspect is currently undergoing preliminary investigation. The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the populace and will leave no stone unturned to rid the nation of terrorists and insurgents.

“The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has commended the bravery and dedication of the valiant troops in these successful operations.

“The Nigerian Army assures the public of its unwavering commitment in executing its constitutional responsibilities,” it added.
