US President Donald Trump has declared plans to replace the recently deceased Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the US Supreme Court.
Trump, in a tweet, said that the replacement of Ginsburg was an "obligation" that should be carried out without "delay".
He tweeted, “We were put in this position of power and importance to make decisions for the people who so proudly elected us, the most important of which has long been considered to be the selection of United States Supreme Court Justices. We have this obligation, without delay!”
The passing of Ginsburg has led to Democrats and Republicans contesting her replacement, especially as it nears the election in November.
Democrats reminded members of the GOP of their rejection of a Supreme Court justice nominee presented by Obama in 2016, stating that a replacement could not be confirmed during an election year - Obama had submitted Judge Merrick Garland as a replacement to Antonin Scalia, but rejected by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of the GOP said, “If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait to the next election. And I’ve got a pretty good chance of being the Judiciary [chairman]. Hold the tape."

McConnell also made his intentions clear, stating that a precedent would not stop him from approving a replacement should an opening present itself.
He said, “Americans re-elected our majority in 2016 and expanded it in 2018 because we pledged to work with President Trump and support his agenda, particularly his outstanding appointments to the federal judiciary. Once again, we will keep our promise. President Trump’s nominee will receive a vote on the floor of the United States Senate.”
