The game started with a bang as Bayern scored three goals in the first 23 minutes, leaving Dortmund struggling to keep up.
New Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel had a winning start against his former team, thanks to an own goal by Dortmund's goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, and goals from Thomas Mueller and Leroy Sane.
Bayern's victory helped them reclaim the top spot in the Bundesliga with 55 points, leaving Dortmund two points behind in second place with eight matches remaining.
The win also gives Bayern momentum as they prepare to face Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals on 11 April.
Despite Bayern's seemingly unassailable lead, Dortmund managed to score two late goals, with an Emre Can penalty in the 72nd minute and a stoppage-time effort from Donyell Malen. However, it was too little too late for the visitors, who were left in complete disbelief after the first-half onslaught by Bayern.
Union Berlin also had a good day, securing a 3-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart, which places them in third position with 51 points.
