Tunisians Defy Social Gathering Ban, Protest Against Country

Hundreds of protesters in Tunisia stormed the streets to protests against President Kais Saied's power grab in July, 2021.

Amid social gathering ban to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the protesters defied the orders imposed on Thursday and marched out on Friday.

The Tunisian police used tear gas and water cannons against the demonstrators as around 300 protesters gathered on Mohamed V Avenue, where some broke through a police cordon before being forced back by the police with batons.

Security forces were mounted and deployed to block the protesters from reaching Habib Bourguiba Avenue and the Interior Ministry headquarters.

On July 25, 2021, Saied's staged a coup to oust the government, froze the parliament and seized powers. He has since ruled with force over the citizens of the country.
