Turkish Coast Guard Rescues 53 Migrants In Aegean Sea

The Turkish coast guard units have rescued 53 irregular migrants off the coast of Marmaris district in Muğla province.

This is after they were pushed back into Turkey's territorial waters by Greek authorities.

The Turkish Coast Guard Command said on Monday that the migrants were rescued from two life rafts and a rubber boat.

It added that the migrants were then moved to the provincial migration office.

Turkey and human rights groups have consistently reported on illegal pushbacks and other human rights breaches by Greek authorities.

Greece overtime has been in the habit of large-scale pushbacks of migrants through the sea.

This is an illegal practice, as pushing back migrants, and asylum-seekers violate humanitarian values and international law by endangering the lives of vulnerable migrants, including women and children.
